Microsoft Windows 11

Recently my laptop automatically installed a Bios update and since then, the audio has been acting strange. Just for some background, the laptop was very lightly used but I completely reset the system and it was working great for a few weeks, and I've never connected any sort of Bluetooth speaker or headphones to it. No matter how loud I set the audio to, it completely blasts the audio. It's the same volume whether it's at 2% or 80%, and it only turns off when I mute it completely. I've found the audio mixer still works and I can use it to adjust the volume on my apps, but it's annoying and I feel there's a solution I haven't tried.

I've already tried uninstalling my speakers from the device manager and resetting the laptop, connecting it and un-connecting it to various audio devices, resetting the laptop, and I'm debating factory resetting the laptop completely just to try and fix this issue. I use this laptop for school and need it to run smoothly so I'm not struggling with my classes. If you have any ideas of what's going on or what to do, let me know! Thank you!

Hi @katviolet,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed background—this sounds like a frustrating issue, especially since it started after a BIOS update. The fact that your volume is stuck at a high level regardless of the setting suggests a driver or firmware conflict, possibly introduced by the BIOS update.

Steps to Fix the Audio Volume Issue

1. Rollback the Audio Driver

Sometimes, BIOS updates can conflict with newer drivers:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click your audio device (e.g., Realtek, Intel Smart Sound) and select Properties.
  • Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver (if available).

2. Reinstall the Audio Driver

  • Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  • Enter your laptop model and download the latest audio driver.
  • Uninstall the current driver from Device Manager, then install the downloaded one.

3. Reset BIOS to Default Settings

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  • Look for an option like "Restore Defaults" or "Reset to Default Settings".
  • Save and exit.

4. Use the HP Audio Check Tool

HP provides a diagnostic tool that can automatically detect and fix audio issues:

5. Check Windows Sound Settings

  • Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar > Sounds.
  • Under Playback, select your speakers and click Properties.
  • Go to the Enhancements tab and check Disable all enhancements.
  • Under the Levels tab, ensure the volume is adjustable.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
