I turned on my computer today and attempted to play a video but the audio didn't work. I tried to sort it out using advice from online but it keeps saying that the audio peripheral isn't plugged in. The sign at the bottom right of the screen also shows a red cross and I can't figure out what to do.

Your machine is an HP 255 G5 NOTEBOOK PC. That probably due to Windows updates. Re-install driver should help. Please try

(a) Download the following driver and save on your computer,

    https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp81001-81500/sp81305.exe

(b) Go to Device Manager, Sound to uninstall sound driver and reboot,
(c) Right click downloaded file and select Run as administrator,
(d) Reboot again.

Regards.
