Hi,
I've had problems with audio before so I hope this will help.
I recommend going to HP's official Driver and software download website: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-elitebook-8460p-notebook-pc/5056942
Since your notebook is an older model, I am assuming you are running Windows 8.1..?
Select your operating system and whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit.
Download the audio drivers for your OS, but do not install it yet, save it into your computer for later.
Uninstall your current audio driver from the device manager and reboot.
After rebooting, install the new drivers as an Administrator by right clicking the file and selecting 'Run as administrator'
After it installs, reboot your notebook.
Hopefully this helps.

Uninstall your current audio drivers using the device manager and restart your laptop.
Then, go to https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-elitebook-8460p-notebook-pc/5056942 and select your operating system to find the drivers for your device. Download them, however do not use the HP tool to install it onto your laptop.
Go into your downloads folder and run the driver as an administrator.

Try this website, https://www.driversupport.com/knowledge-article/how-to-realtek-audio-driver-solutions-for-windows/
I am not sure of what could be the case then if you are using Windows 10. I think this article will have some answers, if not, I recommend speaking to an HP agent directly.
