This problem would appear to be quite common, in fact there are several YouTube videos and forum posts here and elsewhere dedicated to it. The light was working until the other day, and suddenly stopped - I'm not sure if it is a consequence of a recent Windows update or not, as I really didn't notice straight away. I had the same problem with my older laptop, an HP Pavilion, but managed to solve it, I think by resetting the BIOS defaults. However, I've been unable to get the light working again on my Envy laptop. Any suggestions? I think I've tried practically everything. The mute functions normally; it's just the light that has stppped working.

Hi @Florio60,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The issue of the audio mute light not working correctly on HP Envy laptops can be quite common and could be caused by various factors, such as software updates or system settings. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Reset the BIOS to Default Settings:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it on and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly to enter the BIOS setup.
  • Once in the BIOS menu, press the F9 key to select and load the BIOS Setup Defaults.
  • Press F10 to save and exit. This step can sometimes resolve issues related to hardware indicators by resetting the system's hardware configuration.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure your Windows operating system is up-to-date, as HP regularly works with Windows to fix known issues related to hardware lights and indicators.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on "Check for updates."

Update the Audio Driver:

  • Open Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).
  • Expand the "Sound, video, and game controllers" section.
  • Right-click on your audio device and select "Update driver." Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."
  • Restart the laptop if prompted.

Reinstall the HP Support Assistant:

  • Sometimes, support software can help address issues with system indicators. You can download and install the latest version from HP Support Assistant | HP® Support.
  • Use it to run hardware diagnostics and update your system drivers.

Perform a Hard Reset (Power Reset):

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect it from any external power source.
  • Remove the battery if it’s removable.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to release any residual charge.
  • Reconnect the battery and power source, then turn on the laptop.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you Jerry_57. I've already carried out all of the steps you've suggested, but will try them again over the next few days. I'm convinced that this problem is the result of a software update somewhere along the line, and so must be 'fixable'. Perhaps a future update will put things right. In any case, since this is a frequent problem with HP computers (from what I've read online), it's something that HP could look into.

Thanks Jerry_57,

My laptop has not yet managed to install the latest update after numerous attempts (I've read online that many people with new laptops are having the same problem). I'm hoping that when this download is eventually installed then the mute light might start working again.

Hi Jerry_57,

Just a further update. Yesterday I finally managed to download and install the latest Windows update -- 2025-12 Security Update (KB5072033) (26100.7462) -- which kept failing. Once this was done, the mute light began working once again. Thanks for all your help.

HI @Florio60,

Thank you for your response.

It’s great to hear the update has finally settled in — like a smooth click after repeated stumbles — and the mute light now shines back to life. I’m glad the frustration has eased.
