Pavilion dv7
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

After upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista, the speakers have stopped working. After the initial activation of the new OS but before applying required win7 updates, I updated the audio device driver in the device manager window and had sound. The speaker icon on the control panel changed to white from red and I had sound. However, the Windows update process malfunctioned and audio was lost at some point where the icon on the control panel went to red and never recovered. I have rolled back and reapplied the driver but with no success. I did notice on the touch control panel, the speaker icon is red for muted. However, if I acces the IDT or Windows control panel and observe the speaker status, I can touch the mute control and cause the software to recognize the speaker is muted. When I touch the mute icon again, the software reflects the speaker is now un-Muted, but, the speaker /mute icon on the touch panel never changes from red to white.

Hello,

Thanks for the advise on this. I did review my troubleshooting steps based on other web queries and found that if I load the local driver rather than searching in the web, sound is now restored and as well the touch panel works as well.

I went in to the device manager panel and selected “IDT High Definition Audio CODEC” and corresponding update driver software selection. Instead of searching automatically on the Internet, I chose Let me pickup a list of device drivers on my computer and specified c:\windows\ as the directory with the “Include Subfolders” box checked.

From the resulting search list, I selectedHigh Definition Audio Deviceand immediately sound was restored.

For good measure, I shutdown the PC and powered it back on, the sound is still working.
