I plugged into the only jack I could find (on the left side, towards the front) with my aux cable and connected it to an external speaker.  Unfortunately, the sound isn't transferring from the laptop speaker to the external speaker.  How do I get this to work properly?  Thanks!

Hi! @Misty58, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!

I understand you need to how to connect AUX cable from the laptop to speakers and get the audio output.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

What kind of cable are you using from your laptop to the speakers?

What is the product name or model of speakers you are trying to connect?

Please try the steps recommended below.

If the speakers are properly connected and sound is not audible through the built-in speakers, verify that the device is installed and configured by following the steps below.
Click Start, Control Panel, and then Hardware and Sound.
Click Manage audio devices under Sound to open the Sound window.
From the Playback tab on the Sound window, click the Speakers and Headphones icon to enable the Configure button, and then click Configure to open the Speaker Setup window.
 NOTE:
If you are using an HDMI video connection with an HDMI monitor that has speakers, the HDMI cable is only capable of sending audio to the monitor speakers when HDMI audio is selected as the default device from the Playback tab. Instead of selecting Speakers as the default device from the Playback tab, select Realtek HDMI Audio, and then click the Set Default button.
Select the option that represents your speaker setup from the Audio channels field, and then click Test.
If the sound is audible from each speaker, or if the configuration type was changed, click Next to continue with the speaker setup, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the speaker setup.

Refer this article to know more information about connecting speakers or headphones to your PC.

Also, try updating the audio drivers and BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.

Please find the link to update audio drivers.

Please keep me updated!

Have a pleasant day ahead! 🙂
