Hello.

The microphone was working when the laptop has been purchased but now is no longer working.

By checking the devices, the Stereo Mix is selected as microphone and no other microphones are available in the list except for the one that can be plugged in with a 3.5 mm jack.

On top of the screen there is the camera and the microphone. The camera works but the microphone no. I tried with the app Sound Recorder and the voice is not recorded but only anything is played on the laptop (like a song or video).

I have disabled the Stereo Mix under the "Device Manager", however, if I run the audio troubleshooting with the HP Support

Assistant then the Stereo Mix is restored. I also tried on search for new drivers but nothing.

I have updated Microsoft Windows on the 05/01/2025 but nothing has changed, the built-in microphone is not recognized.

What I can do?

Thank you for your help.

Cressi

@Cressi, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Thanks for the detailed information and screenshots.

Check Hidden Devices

Go to Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices

Expand Audio inputs and outputs

See if "Microphone Array" or "Internal Microphone" appears (grayed or not). If so:

Right-click > Enable

If not installed properly, choose Uninstall, then restart your PC.

Reinstall Audio Drivers Manually

Go to: HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp2000 (67K42AV) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

Download and install:

Realtek High Definition Audio Driver

Any HP Audio Control driver, if listed

Restart after installation.

BIOS Audio Settings

Reboot and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing Esc or F10 at startup)

Check if Audio Device is enabled

If there's a toggle for “Internal Microphone” or “Audio DSP,” make sure it's ON.

HP Diagnostics UEFI Test

Restart and tap Esc, then choose F2 for HP UEFI Diagnostics

Run Component Tests > Audio Test and check for microphone test

If it fails or doesn't detect the internal mic, it's likely a hardware or board connection fault.

Create a New User Profile

Sometimes permissions or settings get corrupted:

Create a new local user account

Log into it and check if the microphone is detected under Sound > Recording

Also, refer to this guide: HP PCs - Microphone troubleshooting (Windows 10) | HP® Support

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello. Thank you for all your suggestion but it did not work. I explain what I did for fixing the issue.

  1. I have enabled to see hidden devices, but no Microphone appeared.
  2. I have already downloaded manually the drivers (https://support.hp.com/id-en/drivers/hpdiaclosure/hp-17-laptop-pc-17-cp2000/model/2101251640) and installed them but nothing has changed.
I did it again today but nothing.
  3. I entered the BIOS but there is nothing regarding Audio settings.
  4. I run the HP UEFI Diagnostics but since it does not detect anything, the test can be performed only if I plug an external microphone in the left jack 3.5mm port.

After restarting the PC again, then I opened the Device Manager again and it appeared a "Microphone Array (AMD Audio Device)". It's enabled.
However, if I run the Sound Recorder app, I see the microphone device on the bottom left, but if I click record it's not recording and then it crashes.
The "nice" thing that the "Microphone Array (AMD Audio Device)" disappear from the device manager list!
I noticed an issue under the "AMD Audio CoProcessor", so I tried to have the driver update but it's answered that the last drivers are installed.

So, I searched on the Internet and landed in this page: https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html
I downloaded the package, and an AMD Software Installer started to download some unknown packages.
I am not sure that drivers for a graphic board would solve the audio issues, but I heard some sounds during the installation.
In any case, the "Microphone Array (AMD Audio Device)" reappered.
Then, tried again with the Sound Recorder, it recorded my voice, but the volume was very low.
I have increased the volume of the microphone and finally I can say that it worked!

Then, I am not an expert, but it seems the microphone is AMD and not Realtek, right?

Thank you for the support.

Hey @Cressi,

Great to hear the microphone is working now! And yes, based on your troubleshooting, it looks like the built-in mic is handled by the AMD audio drivers rather than Realtek.

Thanks for the update and the detailed steps
