If not, how can I get a good sounding microphone/headphone combo into the laptop?
If no combo is possible - will it take a USB based microphone and I'd use headphones separately?

What is your HP Stream, I believe it has headphones/microphone combo port. From the link, it has
Dual plugs - easy to use: Uses two 3. 5mm plugs, one for the microphone, one for the headphones, perfect for computers with separate connections for each.
That means you have to get an adapter to combine two pink and green in one. For example
