Hello,

My Chromebook has started making a high frequency sound when I try to stream video or use the audio in any way. When the sound starts nothing seems to help besides closing out the streaming service. Muting the speaker does not stop the high frequency sound. The sound does not occur all the time and I can use my chromebook without any issues, so long as I don't try to use audio. I'm assuming this is a problem with my speaker? Can I fix this issue myself? My chromebook is past warranty at this point.  (Edited)

Thanks in advance!

@LoJaHe121417, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear about the high-frequency sound issue with your HP Chromebook. This can be quite frustrating. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue yourself:

  1. Check for Software Updates: Ensure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS. Sometimes, updates can fix bugs that cause audio issues.
  2. Reset Audio Settings: Go to the settings menu and reset your audio settings to default. This can sometimes resolve conflicts causing the high-frequency sound.
  3. Disable Hardware Acceleration: In Chrome, go to Settings > Advanced > System and toggle off "Use hardware acceleration when available." This can sometimes help with audio issues during streaming.
  4. Test with External Speakers or Headphones: Connect external speakers or headphones to see if the issue persists. If the sound is clear, the problem might be with the internal speakers.
  5. Powerwash Your Chromebook: This is a factory reset that can resolve many software-related issues. Make sure to back up your data before doing this. Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
