HP ENVY - 17-s113ca
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The notebook contains an optical drive (F:hp DVDRWDU8AESH) and the burning software I used has been Nero Burning Rom 2017 which I recently upgraded to Nero Burning Rom 2023. The problem is the optical drive fails to burn a CD most of the time. On occasion it will burn a CD right after a restart of the computer. This problem occurs using either Nero Burning Roms.

The computer was purchased in 2017 and I had no trouble with burning CDs using "Staples" CD - R until recently. I switched to the Verbatim blank CD-R brand but that did not solve the problem. From two failed burns I emailed two logs to Nero Tech Support for analyses and I received the same answer for both logs which is "KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR The disc/medium used for burning is damaged". I believe that I have determined that the disc is not the problem then it has to be the medium.

I should note that the optical drive will copy a CD to the computer and play a CD without any problems using VLC Media Player.

Can the medium be the optical drive hardware and or the software that operates the optical drive?

Is there a fix for this problem or should I just purchase a new external CD / DVD burner?

Thank you
