I'm experiencing a persistent audio issue with my HP laptop and would really appreciate your help or suggestions.

Recently, my laptop has started producing a constant crackling or distorted sound from the built-in speakers, even when earphones are plugged in.

When I play music or any audio with earphones connected, I can hear the sound clearly through the earphones.

However, at the same time, the laptop speakers start crackling and producing distorted noise even though audio output is set to the earphones.

If I switch back to using just the built-in speakers, the distortion is even worse. It almost sounds like the speakers are physically damaged.

The issue persists across different apps and even after system restarts.

I've already tried basic troubleshooting: updated the audio drivers, restarted the system, checked all sound settings, and even ran the Windows troubleshooter but the problem still remains.

Has anyone faced something similar? Could this be a hardware issue, or is it something more likely related to the audio drivers or software settings?

Hi @LostInWano,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding crackling noise from HP laptop speakers and headphones!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Update Audio Drivers:

  • Ensure that your audio drivers are up-to-date. You can do this by visiting the HP Support site or using the HP Support Assistant to check for and install any available updates.

Check Sound Settings:

  • Right-click on the sound icon in the system tray and select "Sound Settings."
  • In the "Playback" tab, select your speakers or headphones, and click on "Properties."
  • In the "Advanced" tab, ensure that the default format is set appropriately (e.g., 24 bit, 48000 Hz). Try changing this setting to see if it resolves the issue.

Disable Audio Enhancements:

  • In the "Sound Settings," go to your speaker properties and select the "Enhancements" tab.
  • Uncheck any audio enhancements and apply the changes to see if it improves the audio quality.

Run Audio Troubleshooter:

  • Search for "Troubleshoot settings" in Windows and select "Additional troubleshooters."
  • Find and run the "Playing Audio" troubleshooter to automatically detect and fix audio issues.

Check Hardware Connections:

  • Make sure there are no loose connections or debris in your headphone jack. Clean it gently if necessary.

Mute Internal Speakers:

  • If the issue persists only when headphones are plugged in, consider manually muting the internal speakers using the sound settings or dedicated keyboard key.

Test with External Speakers:

  • If possible, connect external speakers to determine if the issue is limited to the laptop's built-in speakers or if it is a broader issue.

Restore System:

  • Consider performing a system restore to revert changes that might have caused the audio issue.

I hope this helps.
