What is your HP Laptop 15-bs1xx ? The series has
Fixed, serial ATA, 9.0-mm tray load DVD+/-RW Double-Layer writer
And yes, you can play DVD's with this type of machines. But you need to find EXACTLY its model/product to confirm. Please use the following instructions to find out the model/product of your machine:

Please do NOT post its Serial number (s/n).
