Two problems actually: the first is that there is no audio through the DisplayPort and the icon (two, actually, both the same) in the sound playback box shows "Digital sound (HDMI)....text.... not connected" and nothing I know what to do can get it (them? connected. Video, through a HDMI/DisplayPort adapter and HDMI cable works just fine on my Philips TV. The other problem is that the light on thr Volume mute switch only displays amber regardless of whether the sound is muted or not. The function works but the color of the light does not reflect said reality. Both these problems are driving me crazy, so please any help would be greatly appreciated. As I am a complete novice, baby steps on what to do would be a big help.

Firstly not all DP ports carry sound specially using HDMI to DP adapter. Please check with adapter vendor to confirm this.

From what I can ascertain the adapter will allow sound but not being able to connect the HDMI unit (as the sound box says is the case) seems to be the problem. Both the speakers and headphones work and the sound box shows that such is the case.

My question stays: Have you checked with adapter vendor ? Can you connect HDMI Directly ?

No HDMI port, only  a DisplayPort port. Don´t know if the adapter is wired for sound or not, it came with the computer (2nd hand buy). I thought all were wired for sound but apparently such is not the case. I have a new one coming in a few days wired for 7:1 sound. Any way to tell if the adapter is yes or no sound wise (no maker name on mine)? Any ideas concerning my other problem, i.e, the mute switch light color not switching to turquoise when it should?

An update: received the new adapter with the built-in sound but the problem remains the same, i.e. the HDMI connection icon still shows no connection, even when the adapter and HDMI cable to the TV is plugged in. Video yes, audio no. The headphones icon also shows that they are not connected when they are not but when plugged in it shows that they are with a green check. The properties box says that the HDMI device is working properly but I can´t find a way to do a connect.

An update: the problem still exists: the DP/HDMI cable is new and wired for sound. I have two icons for Digital sound (HDMI) 2-hi def audio device, both say they are working properly and are activated for use but both also say that they are not connected and I cannot find a way to connect either one. According to m´soft the computer all drive routines are up-to-date.  Please someone help me solve this dilemma.
