Internal speakers work fine. When I connect external speakers to the 3.5mm jack, the internal speakers still play and the externals do not. The external speakers are fine...any suggestions?

Hello, I decided to really dig around in this thing, I discovered that even though I am using speakers, I had to change the selection to headset. If I used the speaker selection, It told me to use the analog output jacks, which this machine doesn't have. However, if I select headset, it says to use the 3.5mm jack which, I was already plugged into, and it suddenly decided to start working. I am baffled by this chain of events, but as long as it is working, I am satisfied. Still, I would never recommend these machines to anybody. Thank you all for all your help.

Item 5 below is the audio jack

BeemerBiker_0-1745881186172.png

Connects optional powered stereo speakers, headphones,
earbuds, a headset, or a television audio cable. Also
connects an optional headset microphone. This jack does
not support optional standalone microphones.

Make sure the plug is in all the way.

You can also look at the audio mixer and force an audio out path

Bring up the sound mixer and set the audio to the graphics device if using HDMI or to the speaker system.

for example.

I appreciate your suggestion, however, I already tried all of that and it didn't work. I have 2 of these laptops and they both do exactly the same thing. I regret the purchase of these laptops and won't buy any more HP products again. I have had nothing but problems with these. They are only 4 moths old....sad.

Check to see if there is a hardware problem: Watch this video.

Tap the ESC key after powering on. Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics.

Connect your headset and run the audio test. If the headset / headphones fail to work then return the laptops under warranty.  Let me know the results of the test.

BTW, what model headset or headphones?  Do you have a link to the vendor?

A desktop system I had quit working after a feature update.  I discovered that the new windows audio did not recognize the rear connectors but worked on the front panel connectors of my desktop PC.  You do not have a choice like that on your laptop but I just wanted to mention that windows updates can mess with the PC subsystems.
