External speakers for HP Laptop

I have an HP laptop and am trying to connect external speakers through the headphone jack.  Will this work?  Headphones work with this jack.  External speakers work through another desktop PC.  I cannot find information to indicate whether I can use external speakers with this HP laptop.

Hi:

The should work fine if they have a USB power source, or AC power source.

Thanks Paul.  You concur with what I have generally read.  However, I cannot get sound from these speakers on the laptop.  I'll keep looking at settings to see if something needs changed.

I'm thinking the speakers should just have automatically worked.

Go to the windows control panel>hardware and sound>sound>manage audio devices and see that the headphone jack is set as the output with the speakers connected.

If it is, unfortunately, I would have no idea why the speakers aren't working from the headphone jack.
