Disaster …. I got the error message “no audio device found”, and the microphone showed the same after I updated windows. I decided to try a factory rest using HP help service, which downloaded onto a usb drive. All was well at this point, I followed the prompts from F11 boot up and away it went. Half way through the reinstall, a pop up informed me that I was on battery power, and the next step required my laptop to be plugged in. I plugged it in, hit the continue button ….. and nothing happened, I reconnected the power cord several times and clicking on the continue didn’t make the pop up disappear, which meant the re-installation wouldn’t continue. Having tried everything, I had no option to turn the computer off. Now it won’t reboot and when trying to recover through F11, it comes up with an error 🤷🤷. I’m now truly stuck and only know it’s an HP envy, i7, 1TB SSD, originally cost around £1,100.

Hi @Umberto2005,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It sounds like your HP Envy 17-ch0000 is stuck in a failed factory reset due to the power check, and now it won’t boot properly. Since F11 (Recovery Mode) is also failing, we’ll need to try some advanced recovery options.
Force Restart & Try Booting Again
- Turn off the laptop completely (Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds).
- Disconnect everything (USB drives, external devices, power cord).
- Plug in the power adapter and try turning it on.
- If it boots to Windows, great! If not, move to Step 2.
Hard Reset the Laptop (BIOS Reset)
This resets your hardware without erasing data:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if possible).
- Hold the power button for 30-60 seconds to drain residual power.
- Reconnect the charger (without battery, if removable) and turn it on.
- If it boots, great! If not, move to Step 3.
Try the HP BIOS Recovery
- Turn off the laptop.
- Hold the "Windows" + "B" keys, then press and hold the power button for about 5-10 seconds.
- Release the power button, but keep holding Windows + B until you hear beeps or see the BIOS recovery screen.
- If the BIOS recovery runs, follow the prompts to restore the BIOS and restart.
If this works, try booting into Windows again. If not, move to Step 4.
Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Requires Another PC)
Since your USB recovery failed, you can create a new HP recovery drive:
- On another working PC, download the HP Cloud Recovery Tool:
- Link: HP Cloud Recovery Tool
- Insert a 16GB or larger USB drive into the working PC.
- Use the tool to create a new recovery USB for your HP Envy 17.
- Plug the USB into your broken laptop.
- Boot from the USB:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press F9 repeatedly at startup to open the Boot Menu.
- Select the USB drive and press Enter.
- Follow on-screen instructions to reinstall Windows.

Clean Install Windows Manually (If HP Recovery Fails)
If HP's recovery tool doesn’t work, you can install a fresh copy of Windows:
- On another PC, go to Microsoft's official site:
- Use Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB (at least 8GB).
- Plug the USB into your HP Envy and boot from it (F9 at startup).
- Follow the instructions to install Windows from scratch.
Check for Drivers
Once Windows is reinstalled, go to the HP website and download the latest audio drivers and chipset drivers for your HP Envy 17-ch0000.
Let me know how it goes!
If you get stuck on any step, tell me what error messages you see. 😊
