HP ENVY TouchSmart m7-j078ca N
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Connection has been working fine for weeks but after disconnecting HDMI cable to work away from TV sound didn't work when reconnected.

Under Sound, Video and Game Controllers I have 1) Cyberlink Webcam Virtual Driver 2) High Definition Audio Device 3) High Definition Audio Device 4) NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) WMD.  Followed instructions regarding Hard Reset and reboot - no sound.  (I believe both HDADs had appeared lately from a Microsoft update but predated cable disconnect.)

Deleted both HDADs and rebooted - both came back but second instance had (!) - no sound - tried again - same result.  Checked Sound/Playback - internal speakers only listed.

Collected IDT Audio driver from HP Support.  Deleted both HDADs and installed IDT driver from 2013 (only option) and rebooted.  HDAD appeared with (!) as item (2) and IDT (CODEC) driver at (3).  Checked Sound/Playback - now internal speakers and Headphone Communication listed - no HDMI.  No HDMI listed under Display Adapters.

Tried removing just HDAD and installed IDT driver again - can't get rid of that driver.  No sound.

Troubleshooting reports that there is something wrong with HDAD driver which it does not fix.  Update reports that the driver is the latest.  Driver properties report a Code 10.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot.

Update:

Just out of curiosity I rolled back the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 driver to the 2016-09-29 version.  My Sony TV now shows up under playback devices.  I have sound.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

As I Understand you have a code 10 error and there's no sound after the HDMI was disconnected,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Do you have an external set of speakers connected to the PC, now?

Did you reinstall the display adapters?

Have you updated the BIOS and display?

(Click here, if you haven't to find and install it).

While you respond to that, please restart the computer and then follow the below suggestions:

Did you install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 10 error appeared? If so, it's possible that the change you made caused the Code 10 error.

Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 10 error.

Depending on the changes you made, some solutions might include:

  • Removing or reconfiguring the newly installed device.
  • Rolling back the driver to a version prior to your update.
  • Using System Restore to undo recent Device Manager related changes.
  • Reinstall the drivers for the device. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers for the device is a likely solution to a Code 10 error.

Let me know how that pans out

I hope you have a good day ahead,

Your question: Did you install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 10 error appeared? If so, it's possible that the change you made caused the Code 10 error.

Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 10 error.

This is where I deleted both of the High Def Audio Dev and then rebooted.  When I checked Device Manager Windows had reinstalled the HDAD drivers which were still listed twice but the second HDAD had the Code 10 the first one was okay.  Also, I had nothing other than internal speakers listed on the Playback screen.  I went to the HP site and followed the instructions for updating the audio driver(s) including a Hard Reset - same thing.  Then I followed the instructions for reinstalling the original driver from the product page which was IDT for my machine.

After the reboot I had HDAD at number 2 on the list with (!) and at number 3 IDT Audio Device CODEC but now Headphone Communication had appeared under Sound/Playback which wasn't there before.

I have no idea what was listed under Device Manager or Sound/Playback for any of these issues before because I didn't have to look.  I had plugged in the HDMI cable and it had worked.

I have read somewhere that the HDAD driver which I can't seem to get rid of is not compatible with the IDT driver which could be causing the code 10.  But, that doesn't explain why I got that code when I first removed the HDAD drivers and then rebooted.

I'll follow the suggestions you gave me and let you know how I got on.

Thanks a lot.

Hi there,

I wondered if you had figured out why I can't update my graphics driver which just happens to have the hdmi support that I currently lack.

Since the error message is that the old driver (only one available from support) cannot be validated for my computer should I be rolling back other drivers so that the mix will allow the original?  If so, will they still work with Windows 10?  Also, am I going to keep having this issue with future updates?

Thanks a lot.

@shadowglow

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

As a matter of fact, I have received a few updates on your concern and it looks like the issue should be resolved if you download the driver directly from the manufacturer's site, Click here to download the auto-detect utility and install the drivers from the Intel website.

This should prevent the issue from arising in the future as well.

Let me know how that pans out

Hi there,

I did as you suggested and tried the Intel driver update.  I got the same error message as I posted previously.

I checked under display adpaters there is an Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 loaded as of June 2/17 with the following  comment - Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0416&SUBSYS_1966103C&REV_06\3&11583659&0&10 requires further installation.

On the events page for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M also installed on the same date was the following message -

Device PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1292&SUBSYS_1966103C&REV_A1\4&3a757210&0&0008 requires further installation.

Both these drivers worked fine until a few weeks ago.

By the way, Microsoft just installed more updates but after I did a full Windows 7 type backup.

Thanks a lot.
