After 2+ years I today bought a 5 meter HDMI cable to connect to a HD Samsung TV, no signal detected.

Plugged the cable into a 5 year old Toshiba works perfectly.

Back to the HP to configure dual screen, no output device (apparently it is a sound device). After an hour looking for advice on the web, nothing helps.  No sign of an HDMI device, its like the socket on the case is not wired to anything.

All “HP Fixes & Diagnostics” report on issues, but don’t see an HDMI device

Thanks for the replay, possibly in my frustration I was not clear. My problem was not in configuring the second display, rather that the computer did not acknowledge the second display was attached.

The only “High Definition Audio” devices mentioned in Device manager are:

Device manager

               Sound, video, and game controllers

                              AMD High Definition Audio

….

Realtek High Definition Audio

The two High Definition Audio devices above are reported has having the latest drivers and to be working.

With:

  1. High quality HDMI cable plugged into the laptop port and a Samsung TV.
  2. TV turned on and input set to the port (HDMI4), screen reports no signal.
  3. Computer is turned on.
  4. TV screen reports no signal.
  5. Laptop does not detect a second display.

So far, I am at a loss, I have no buttons to press.

Try the steps below -

Step 1 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 2 HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type, and open HP Support Assistant.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Also, try updating the BIOS. Refer to this document for steps - HP Consumer Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System)

and update using the above steps.

If the issue persists, Try the steps in the document -Resetting Your Computer (Windows 10)

Jay_G24;

Thanks for your suggestions. Checking for windows updates was the first trouble shouting actions, did not think of the BIOS. Second thing was the “HP Support Assistant” where I checked for updates and there was a BIOS update, so I:

  1. Applied BIOS update
  2. Restarted laptop
  3. Tested Using TV as second monitor
    1. Connected HDMI cable
    2. Selected HDMI input (its HDMI(4)
    3. No Signal detected
    4. Shut down TV and computer
    5. Started TV (still set to HDMI(4) input) and computer
    6. No Signal detected
  4. Opened HP Support Assistant
    1. Checked for software and Driver updates
    2. Opened Fixes and Diagnostics
      1.      Ran Fix Audio Issues
      2.      Realtek High Definition Audio.
Reported as disabled, I can find no way to enable it.
  •      AMD High Definition Audio.
    Reported as disconnected.

I have repeated all the above this morning and applied a windows update. The above is still my current situation, with an added complication.

I trying to find how some way to turn on duplicate displays (cant say how) I got a notification style windows with buttons giving options for two displays, all but one button had no impact, the last button (which I thing suggested the second monitor should be the only display) made the lap top screen go black, with on signal to the TV.

Now when I plugin the HDMI cable my screen goes blank and returns when I unplug the HDMI cable. I have not been able to bring this window up again. It may need the second display before it will show.

Do you know:

  1. Can I do anything to make my laptop screen active when I plugin the HDMI cable?
  2. How I can enable the “Realtek High Definition Audio”?  The driver is installed and working and “Realtek High Definition Audio” set to start when the laptop boots.
  3. Any solutions. I am trying to run online meetings and wish to show the screen on the TV as the laptop is not for 6 remote attendees.

Thank you

John
