HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-ch0000 IDS Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

I generally have the laptop speakers turned off, I don't like beeps, notification sounds, etc..  I went to connect my laptop to a Zoom meeting and discovered that the internal speakers disappeared.  I didn't knowingly do that.  I can't say exactly when they disappeared, e.g. after an update or whatever.  I've tried to reinstall the audio drivers but device manager still doesn't show the internal speakers.  When I go to System > Sound, the 'Choose to play sound' option says 'No output devices found'.  The 'Add device' can't find them.  The really weird thing is when I go to Device Manager and select 'Sound, video, and game controllers', my iPad Pro shows up!?  I never added that knowingly.  I will connect the iPad occasionally to my PC to sync files and music, but I never use it to display or listen to stuff from my PC.  I read somewhere where Apple is making it easier to connect AirPods to Windows, so could it be linked to that?

In any case, I want my laptop speakers back.  That is all I need for audio output.

I just completed a total Windows 11 Pro reinstall in the hopes that it would find the audio drivers and reengage the speakers.  Nope.  I reinstalled the speaker drivers from the HP support website, no joy.  It can absolutely not find the laptop speakers.

The keyboard button to mute the speaker is NOT lit, and if I press it it shows a speaker with a line through it and the volume is 0.  It cannot change.

I'm convinced this is an HP problem, so I'm hoping for an answer here.  Please.  I bought the laptop in December 2021 and it has never left the house.

Hello texgeekboy, I leave you the link of the audio driver to download.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp138501-139000/sp138538.exe

I also leave you a tool in case you are missing drivers to install.

Thanks Jos1_ .

I tried both your suggestions, no joy.  I think the problem is deeper than missing drivers.  My last use of the internal speakers was about 2 weeks ago when I got some new music.  After listening to it I pressed the speaker button to turn off the speakers (I almost always have the speakers turned off), and the orange light came on as normal.  About 2 days ago I went to connect to a Zoom meeting, and could not get my speakers to work (luckily I have a backup PC).  Ever since then I've been googling anything to help.  I even did a full win11 reinstall.  Nope, still the same.  I don't think there's a damaged hardware problem, the PC doesn't go anywhere, just sits on my desk in the study.  I'm the only one that uses it.

I downloaded any and every HP diagnostic tool I could find and ran an audio check.  A screen capture of that result is at the bottom.

The extremely strange thing is that on Device Manager>Sound, video, and game controllers I have the following 2 items I've never seen; My iPad Pro A2DP SNK, and My iPad Pro Hands-Free HF Audio.  I've never asked for them to be added, nor do I remember a prompt for them.  I connect my iPad to my PC only to upload/download files.  I've never connected it as a AV device.  On that device for my laptop I also have some bluetooth earbuds (non-Apple) that I've added, and 2 things for Intel Smart Sound Technology that I didn't overtly add.

Thanks for providing some help.  As I said, I think this is a really deep issue.

Hello texgeekboy, it's a pleasure to help you, I'm going to leave you a link from HP where online tests are carried out on the laptop, to see if you can find the solution. I'm also going to leave you some CMD or Command Prompt commands to check the entire computer.

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/help/computer

This will scan for and restore corrupted system files.
• When searching, type CMD.
• Right-click Command Prompt > Open as administrator

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

When you're done, type another command to start System File Checker

In the same command prompt window. Copy and paste this command:
type sfc /scannow (note the space between "sfc" and "/") and press Enter.
After you see a message that says "Verification 100% complete," type exit.

Greetings

Jos1_.

I truly appreciate the help.  The link to the online test was essentially the same test I performed that produced the screen capture I posted yesterday (I think).  I ran it again and no joy.  I ran the commands you supplied.  The first 2 took some time to complete, so I was hopeful something was being done, but in the end they both produced a message 'No component store corruption detected.' .  I don't think the third one did anything. I then ran the sfc /scannow command and it came back okay.  In the hopes something changed I did a restart.  Still the same.

I still think that the 'My iPad Pro A2DP SNK' and 'My iPad Pro Hands-Free HF Audio' devices being on the 'Sound, video, and game controllers' are under 'Device Manager' might point to the problem.  I never added them.  I only transfer Excel files and songs between this PC and my iPad using iTunes.  I've never done mirroring of this device to the iPad or vice versa.  Did iTunes add them, or some Windows Update?  I tried deleting them and they came back after a restart.

One final possible clue.  The 'microphone off' button on my keyboard is illuminated, and if I press it, it won't go off.  As I said I rarely use the internal speakers, and I almost never use the microphone.

Thanks again.

Minor update; I just tried to delete the iPad device drivers in Device Manager.  I restarted and they're still there.  Bummer.

Thanks once again.  I installed this BIOS and still no difference regarding the laptop speakers.

Actually, Banhien is helping me in another thread about this that I posted.  He pointed me to the audio drivers, which I think were the same as yours.  I mentioned this to him, but I did not mention it to you (sorry) that when I ran the .exe file (in admin mode), the popup window showed messages about extracting files, and then went away.  I had no window come up saying 'completed', or 'failed', or anything.  However, in the task bar there was a DOS command window.  When I clicked on it it  was pinging 127.0.0.1.  It appeared to ping it successfully.  In a bit it pinged it again, then the window closed.

Perhaps that's how HP does driver installs, but it didn't seem quite right to me.

Anyway, thanks again.  I'm an optimist so I hope I can get this figured out.

Once again, thanks.  After I clicked that I agreed to the terms, the execution window went away.
