I have the same issue. Sometimes an external microphone works, but most of the time it does not. I have tried two external microphones - one bluetooth and one USB. Both external microphones work perfectly on other computers. The issue is with the built-in hardware on the EVNY. I don't know how to fix this. It is very annoying because the ENVY is my work computer and video is required right now for so many meetings.

@Ackmarine -- I'm really sorry to hear that the USB external microphone workaround did not work consistently. I would have been really upset if my USB headset (including microphone) hadn't solved the problem, because the notebook was only a couple of months out of warranty when shelter-in-place orders caused me to start using the built-in microphone and the 3 mm. headset jack -- and therefore to discover that neither produced clear sound for listeners at the other end. I had never used these aspects of the laptop while it was under warranty. Arghh! I don't know what conference software you are using, but, on Zoom, while I was waiting for the Jamra-manufactured headset to arrive, I used the laptop for video and my iPhone for audio and merged them by participant ID when I got linked into Zoom conferences. It was tedious, but resulted in good audio and good video simultaneously.

@KFBFCA: I was using Google Meet (I am a teacher and this is what we were told to use) and Zoom. The problem has been intermittent. I followed a suggestion that I saw on another thread. I downloaded the latest driver from HP Support (the latest driver is a year old). I uninstalled Realtek Audio and then installed the downloaded driver file. When I tested my microphone it seemed to be okay. The real test came from restarting... In previous "fixes" restarting the computer resulted in a distorted microphone again. This time, though, the "fix" seemed to stick. My computer has been asleep for about 24 hours. I might test it again tomorrow to see how sticky that fix was.

hi guys, i just had some other Solution, i just try to use my phone with some app called Wo mic. this is really helpful too and i just save my money instead of buying a new headset or usb microphone for 20€. but still, if next time i had money to buy a new laptop, i don't think i would buy any hp product anymore, it just disappointed, not just the microphone, the battery too, it only holds for 2-3 hours
