Envy HP laptop

HP Envy - dramas from day 1 with this laptop. It switches off randomly and saved work is lost. Now the microphone sound is muffled regardless of whether a specific device is used. It’s a disaster as I literally bought it to dictate reports and for zoom meetings. Nobody can understand what I’m saying and when I play back the sound on Dragon I can hear why - I sound like I’m under water! I’ve tried problem solving for hours. Can’t believe I bought 3 of there computers. It’s clearly an internal microphone issue. Please help!

Hi @KateFara1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing muffled sound or poor audio quality on your HP Envy laptop, and you suspect that the internal microphone might be faulty, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Check Microphone Settings:

  • Make sure that the microphone is not muted. Sometimes, the microphone can be accidentally muted in the system settings or the application you're using.
  • Adjust the microphone volume to an appropriate level.

Restart Your Laptop:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve software-related issues.

Update Audio Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupted audio drivers can lead to various audio-related problems. Go to the HP support website and download the latest audio drivers for your specific laptop model.

Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Windows has built-in audio troubleshooters that can help diagnose and fix common audio problems. Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot" and run the audio troubleshooter.

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Sometimes, third-party applications or software conflicts can affect microphone functionality. Try disabling or closing any unnecessary applications that might be interfering with your microphone.

Update Operating System:

  • Make sure your operating system is up to date with the latest updates and patches.

Test in Different Applications:

  • Test the microphone in different applications to see if the issue persists across various platforms. This will help determine whether the problem is with a specific app or a system-wide issue.

Physical Inspection:

  • If you suspect a hardware issue, carefully inspect the microphone area for any physical damage or debris that might be affecting its performance.

External Microphone Test:

  • To confirm if the internal microphone is faulty, you can try using an external microphone. If the external microphone works fine, it's more likely that there's an issue with the internal microphone itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
