Envy x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all!

About a couple of weeks ago, my microphone stopped working on my Envy x360 due to Windows Update installing a newer Intel driver and crippling the microphone. Thankfully, I still had working audio coming from my speakers, just no mic at the time. Another new Intel audio driver was pushed via Windows Update at a later time and fixed that issue. I had working speakers and a working microphone once again.

This morning (September 29, 2020), I noticed that my microphone wasn't working again. I pulled up Device Manager and noticed the Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) OED driver was flagged. I manually uninstalled the driver from Device Manager and restarted. I tried reinstalling via Windows Update and the update fails. I have no working speakers and no working microphone.

The working driver that I installed about a week ago seems to have a different version number than the one I pulled from Windows Update today. I am not sure if it's just a bad batch of drivers. If anyone knows of a working driver, it would be highly appreciated.

Note: I am using the Intel variant of the Envy x360, not the AMD variant.

Nvidia MX330

Thanks all,

Jacesupreme

Hi Praveen,

Thanks for the response. I tried checking via Windows Update and there's no update or driver to install. HP Support Assistant says the same.

I have tried manually removing the Intel Audio driver through Device Manager, restarting, and then checking for updates. It downloads an Intel Audio driver, but fails after a period of time.

Thanks,

Please let us know have you tried to update the BIOS.

I would suggets you perform the system reset.

Windows 10 has a reset feature that repairs your computer by reinstalling the operating system. This feature is recommended for recovery because it reinstalls Windows 10 while either preserving your personal data and customizations or removing all your personal data.

You have a choice of two methods to reset your computer.

  • If Windows 10 loads correctly, see the section titled Perform a Windows 10 system reset in Windows in this document.

  • If Windows 10 does not start correctly, see the section titled Perform a Windows 10 system reset through Windows Recovery Environment in this document.

Have a  nice day!!

Hi Praveen,

Thanks again for your response. I have tried updating the BIOS but that hasn't fixed it either.

I was afraid that reinstalling Windows might be my only choice. I will reinstall from scratch when I have time and I hope it fixes this issue.

Thanks,

It has been a while but I thought I would report back. I fixed my issue after finding out that an Nvidia audio driver was installed the whole time. This conflicted with the Intel audio driver Windows Update was trying to install. Because of the conflict, the Intel driver just simply failed the installation. After manually removing the Nvidia audio driver, the Intel driver installed smoothly and everything seemed to work once again. My only other issue is that the microphone and speakers do simply just disconnect occasionally. That is tolerable as a restart fixes it. Overall though, it IS much better!

I hope this helps if anyone has a similar problem.

Thanks,
