I cannot see how to use this port as a mic.  I need to dictate.  Plugging a mic in doesn't change audio panel options.  The mic is an Andrea NC-8J - 3 contacts - and worked on my older ProBook 4530s.

I know. Some HP newer machines the  Headphone/microphone combo jack does not support a stand alone microphone. Your machine could be one of them.

Thanks for the answer.  B&H is selling this laptop as having a combo port.  The HP data sheet also lists it as such.  How can I know?

Not sure what you meant by not supporting standalone mic.  Does that mean a headphone/mic splitter would work?

Otherwise I will need to figure out how to adapt my trs mic plug to usb or trrs\usb.  Major headache!
