Hello HP Community,
I would like to share an issue I faced with an HP ProBook 450 15.6 inch G9 Notebook PC running Windows 11.
Issue:
The internal microphone was not working / not being activated properly. The audio output was working normally, but the internal microphone was not capturing sound or functioning as expected.
Device:
HP ProBook 450 15.6 inch G9 Notebook PC
Operating System:
Windows 11
Troubleshooting attempts:
I checked Windows Sound Settings, microphone privacy permissions, Device Manager, audio inputs and outputs, Realtek Audio, Intel Smart Sound Technology, Intel SST, and OED-related entries. I also tried standard driver troubleshooting and reinstalling audio-related drivers, but the issue was not resolved through the normal troubleshooting steps.
The issue appeared to be related to the audio driver stack and the way Windows was handling the internal microphone through Intel Smart Sound Technology / Intel SST and Realtek Audio components.
I was eventually able to resolve the issue after further investigation, and I will share the solution in the reply below so it may help other users facing the same internal microphone issue on HP ProBook 450 G9 laptops.

Solution:
After further technical investigation, I was able to restore the internal microphone functionality on the HP ProBook 450 G9 without sending the device to a service center.
The following steps were part of the troubleshooting and diagnostic process:
- Checked Windows Sound Settings and confirmed that the internal microphone was not capturing sound properly.
- Checked Windows Microphone Privacy Settings and confirmed that microphone access was enabled for Windows and applications.
- Opened Device Manager and reviewed all audio-related devices, including:
- Audio inputs and outputs
- Sound, video and game controllers
- System devices
- Intel Smart Sound Technology related entries
- Realtek Audio related entries
- Investigated the driver stack related to:
- Intel Smart Sound Technology / Intel SST
- Intel Smart Sound Technology OED
- Realtek Audio
- Internal microphone detection
- Compared the audio-related driver behavior with another working HP ProBook 450 G9 laptop to confirm that the issue was not a simple hardware failure.
- Tried removing and reinstalling the audio-related drivers, including Intel Smart Sound Technology / Intel SST and Realtek Audio components.
- Restarted the laptop several times during the troubleshooting process.
- Reinstalled the required drivers in the correct dependency order, including chipset, Serial IO, Intel SST, and Realtek Audio drivers.
However, the standard troubleshooting steps above did not fully resolve the issue.
Final working solution:
The working solution was to perform a BIOS rollback/recovery through the HP BIOS update menu, while the laptop was connected to a stable internet connection using a LAN cable, not Wi-Fi.
Important prerequisites:
- The laptop must be connected to AC power.
- The laptop must be connected to the internet using a LAN cable.
- The internet connection should be stable.
- Do not interrupt the process once the BIOS rollback/recovery starts.
Steps followed:
- Shut down the laptop completely.
- Power on the laptop and immediately press F10 repeatedly to enter the BIOS setup menu.
- From the BIOS screen, select:
Update System BIOS - In the next screen, select:
Check HP.com for BIOS Updates - From the available options, select the rollback/recovery option:
Roll back BIOS image to BIOS version 01.17.00 - Confirm the BIOS rollback/recovery process.
- When the confirmation code appears on the screen, enter the displayed numbers using the main number row on the keyboard, located under the function keys, not from any external keyboard.
- Wait for the system to complete the BIOS rollback/recovery process.
- The laptop will restart automatically and update the system settings.
- The laptop may restart more than once. Do not press any keys and do not interrupt the process until Windows loads normally.
Result:
After completing the BIOS rollback/recovery process and allowing the laptop to boot normally into Windows, the internal microphone was successfully restored and started working properly again.
I tested the microphone through Windows Sound Settings and recording tools, and it captured sound successfully.
Conclusion:
In my case, the issue was not resolved by standard Windows settings checks, privacy settings, Device Manager troubleshooting, or regular audio driver reinstallation. The final working solution was the BIOS rollback/recovery through the HP BIOS update menu using a stable LAN internet connection.
I hope this helps other HP ProBook 450 G9 users who may face the same internal microphone issue.
