I have that problem, speakers have been silent. When I insert the headphones jack I can hear sound but mic is not working. Some times when I pull out the headphone jack the speakers become active again for a few seconds and then they go silent. It seems that it is not a Windows problem or drivers problems. I booted my PC with several different Linux distros and there is no sound there as well. This means that we have a problem with some hardware component. Some cable is or is not making contact where it should have. The question is, how do we fix it?
I noticed that the audio jack behaves weird. As if it tries to connect disconnect. Some sort of short circuit that fools the system to believe that a headphone set has been plugged in. This is something I noticed by observing the volume sound bar oscillating. Any ideas?

Hi @Dimalt,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've done some thorough troubleshooting already, which is great for narrowing down the issue. Given the symptoms you've described, it's likely that there's a hardware problem with the audio jack or its connections. Here are some steps you can take to further diagnose and potentially fix the issue.
- Inspect the Audio Jack: Visually inspect the audio jack for any signs of physical damage or debris that could be causing a poor connection. Sometimes dust or lint can accumulate inside the jack, causing it to malfunction.
- Check for Loose Connections: Open up your laptop (if you're comfortable doing so) and check for any loose or disconnected cables near the audio jack or the motherboard. Make sure all connections are secure.
- Test with External Speakers: If possible, try connecting external speakers or headphones directly to the laptop's audio port (if available) or through a USB adapter to see if you get sound that way. This can help determine if the issue is specific to the built-in speakers or affects all audio output.
- Update Firmware and Drivers: While you mentioned that you don't believe it's a driver issue, it's still worth ensuring that your laptop's firmware and audio drivers are up to date. Sometimes, HP releases updates to address hardware issues.
Given the intermittent nature of the problem and the observation of the volume sound bar oscillating, it does sound like there could be a short circuit or loose connection causing the issue. Inspecting the audio jack and its connections would be a good starting point.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
