Exactly the same issue around the same time here with no solution yet found. Has there been a fix yet?

HP Spectre x360 Sound Issues (Distortion/Tin Sound)

@Chopdoggah

Welcome to HP support community.

Did you check if the issue persists even when you use headphones?

Meanwhile:

Run a test on the audio device

1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

3. On the main menu, click Component Tests.

4. Select Audio in the list and run the test.

If the test passes, uninstall the audio driver.

  1. Open Run with Windows shortcut keys Win + R.
  2. Type into control and hit the Enter key.
  3. In Control Panel, go to Programs and Features.
  4. Right-click the Audio driver and select Uninstall.

Update the chipset, BIOS and audio driver using HP support assistant.

Let me know how it goes.

HP Spectre x360 Sound Issues (Distortion/Tin Sound)

Hi Sandy.

Still no fix. The sound is fine with headphones in but distorted when they are not in. What is the solution? Seems to be a universal issue as I have read quite a few complaints about it recently..

@Chopdoggah

This seems to be a hardware issue.

I request you to talk to HP support.

They might have multiple options to help you with this.

  1. Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true
  2. Select the country.
  3. Enter the serial of your device.
  4. Select the country from the drop-down.
  5. Click on "Show Options".
  6. Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers.

You could also try disabling the sound enhancements (just have in mind that you'll have to disable them each time you restart your laptop):

-Right click on the speaker icon next to the clock

-Open "Playback Devices"

-Right click on the Speaker and select "Properties"

-Under the "Enhancements" tab, check "Disable All Enhancements"
