@Jof23, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding wired headphones!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Check Physical Connection

  • Ensure Proper Jack Connection: Make sure the headphone plug is securely connected to the headphone jack on your laptop. Sometimes, the connection can be loose, which might cause the sound to default to the laptop speakers.

Adjust Audio Settings

Select the correct Playback Device:

  1. Right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar, and select "Sounds" or "Open Sound settings".
  2. Go to the "Playback" tab.
  3. Check if your headphones are listed. If they are, select them and click "Set Default."

Audio Control Panel: Open your audio control panel (this could be Realtek HD Audio Manager, for example) and ensure that the headphones are selected as the output device.

Update Audio Drivers

  • Check for Driver Updates: Sometimes, outdated or corrupt drivers can cause audio issues.
    1. Go to "Device Manager" by right-clicking the Start menu.
    2. Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" section.
    3. Right-click your audio device and select "Update driver."

Configuration and Testing

Test with Another Port (if available): If your laptop has more than one headphone or audio-out port, try using another port to ensure it's not a problem with the port itself.

Test with Another Application: Try using different audio applications to play sound, as the issue might be specific to a certain application.

System Restart

  • Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

This happened to me few days ago after automatic audio and bluetooth updates on windows or or through hp support assistant.  I am not sure. I had to do a system restore twice and pause all the updates. Mine are bluetooth earphones. I hope they resolve this quickly.
