How can I make the 3.5 mm audio jack work with an external microphone or as “LINE-IN” so that the laptop can record audio coming from an external source such as a micro cassette player?

Other laptops recognize when a device is plugged in to the audio jack and ask how the device is to be used.

This laptop does nothing when I plug a device in to the audio jack.

Plugging in an external microphone does nothing. I used “troubleshooting” and it tells me it doesn’t detect anything is plugged in.

Firstly tapes use analog, you can't plug to your computer directly to your headphones/microphone combo jack. On many machines, you can't even use stand alone microphone using that jack and Line-In is a no go.

You need a proper adapter such as

Thank you for answering. I understand digital vs analog. What I’m trying to do works just fine on an older (and less expensive)  Dell laptop because its 3.5 mm audio jack can work as a microphone jack or as a “LINE-IN,” allowing me to record audio from an analog audio device that is connected via an audio cable.

Looks like with HP, I’ll have to spend extra, and use up a USB port, and just hope I’m not wasting even more time and money. This is the last HP product I’ll purchase. Nothing but Dell and Lenovo from now on.
