I found the solution. First unplug anything plugged into the audio input jack. Then click on the blue and white HP tray icon, and then on the pop-up menu click Audio Control Panel. When the panel appears click Restore. When you plug in a microphone or Line In device into the audio input jack you're prompted to select the type of the device.

Can anyone help me here? The manual says something vague about "reconfiguring the jack" or "setting the jack to its default value" but nothing about where to find it.  I've scoured the web.  I've looked everywhere I can think of (Settings, Control Panel, Device Manager) but see nothing about selecting mic or Line In input, and nothing about a mic input at all: it's as if it didn't exist. I tried uploading the current drivers from the HP web site but that didn't help. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm getting close to buying a sound card but I hate to waste money when there should be a non-cash solution available.

Thanks,
Mike
