My son's new HP laptop has recently stopped playing sound from Chrome through the built-in speakers. Other apps still play sound, as do regular Windows sounds. It seems to be only Chrome that's affected. Additionally, when a headset is plugged in, Chrome plays sounds as it should. The only things that have changed in the last little bit are a couple of games installed through steam (unlikely to cause the problem as far as I understand things), and the fact that the computer was originally set up using Windows 10, but was recently upgraded through the windows installers to be windows 11. I have also recently updated another identical laptop in the same way for my younger son, and it does not exhibit the same issues.
I have tried all the most obvious fixes that I could, from adjusting Chrome settings, the volume mixer and allowed audio settings, to rebooting, updating drivers, and deleting/recreating previous potentially corrupted settings files. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome, but the problem persists. I'm sure there's something I missed, otherwise the problem would be fixed, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what it might be. Doing a factory reset/formatting the computer is not an option right now for reasons that aren't relevant to the issue at hand, but any suggestions or possible fixes would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

Hi @athanwago,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the speakers on your HP laptop are not playing sound specifically from Chrome, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue. Please follow these steps.
- Check volume settings: Ensure that the volume on your laptop is turned up and not muted. You can adjust the volume by clicking on the speaker icon in the taskbar and dragging the slider up.
- Test sound in other applications: Play audio or video files from other applications like Windows Media Player or VLC Player to see if sound is working outside of Chrome. If you can hear sound in other applications, the issue may be specific to Chrome.
- Check Chrome sound settings: Open Google Chrome and type "chrome://settings/content/sound" in the address bar. Make sure that the "Sound" setting is set to "Allow sites to play sound" and that there are no websites listed under the "Muted" section.
- Clear browser cache: Sometimes, accumulated data in the browser cache can cause audio issues. Go to Chrome settings by clicking on the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner, then select "Settings" and navigate to the "Privacy and security" section. Click on "Clear browsing data" and make sure to select "Cached images and files" option. Click on "Clear data" to remove the cache.
- Disable browser extensions: Certain browser extensions can interfere with audio playback. To check if an extension is causing the problem, open a new Chrome tab and type "chrome://extensions" in the address bar. Disable all extensions by toggling them off, then try playing sound in Chrome again.
- Update Chrome and audio drivers: Ensure that you have the latest version of Google Chrome installed. Additionally, check for any available updates for your audio drivers. You can visit the HP support website or use Windows Update to check for driver updates.
- Reset Chrome settings: If none of the above steps work, you can try resetting Chrome settings to their default values. Open Chrome settings, scroll down to the bottom, and click on "Advanced." Under the "Reset and clean up" section, click on "Restore settings to their original defaults" and confirm the action.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
