When I try to turn on the microphone on my HP 15 envy laptop, it says no input devices found. How do I find out for sure if this laptop has a microphone or not? I assumed it would, maybe that was my mistake. I hate the idea of buying a microphone.

Hi @solasko2 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the HP Envy 15 series, comes with a built-in microphone. Here's how to check if your laptop has one and troubleshoot the issue:

1. Confirm if Your Laptop Has a Built-in Microphone

  • Check Specifications: Search for your laptop model online (e.g., "HP Envy 15 [specific model number] specs") or visit the HP Support website.
  • Inspect the Laptop: Look around the webcam area. Built-in microphones are often located near the webcam, with small holes that indicate their presence.

2. Check Microphone Settings in Windows

  • Open Sound Settings:
    1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
    2. Navigate to System > Sound.
    3. Under Input, check if a device is listed. If it says "No input devices found," proceed to the next steps.
  • Troubleshoot:
    1. Click Troubleshoot under the Input section.
    2. Follow the prompts to detect and fix issues.

3. Check Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager (press Win + X and select it).
  • Expand Audio inputs and outputs. Look for a microphone device (e.g., "Internal Microphone" or similar).
  • If it’s missing:
    • Right-click the category and select Scan for hardware changes.
    • If still missing, it might be a driver issue (see step 4).

4. Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
  • Right-click your audio device (e.g., "Realtek High Definition Audio") and select Update driver.
  • Alternatively, download the latest driver from the HP Support website for your laptop model.

5. Enable Microphone in Privacy Settings

  • Press Win + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Privacy & Security > Microphone.
  • Ensure the toggle for Microphone access is turned on.
  • Also, enable access for apps you want to use the microphone with.

6. Test with External Tools

  • Open the Sound Recorder app in Windows and try recording to see if it detects audio.
  • Use an external USB microphone temporarily to test functionality.

7. Hardware Issue HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures

If you've tried all the above steps and your laptop runs the hardware test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
