I am having an issue where I cannot adjust the volume setting. None of the controls are working. I cannot change it when hitting the keyboard buttons or when using the on-screen settings. This is on my Windows 11 laptop.

Hi @DH123104,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop running Windows 11 is stuck in a constant muted state and volume controls (keyboard buttons or on-screen settings) are unresponsive, here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Restart the Computer
- Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve glitches.
Check the Physical Volume Controls
- If your laptop has a mute button or hardware volume dial, ensure it's not stuck or damaged.
Test with an External Device
- Connect headphones or external speakers to check if the issue persists. If the sound works through external devices, it might be an issue with the laptop's internal speakers.
Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
- Right-click your audio device (e.g., Realtek, Intel) and choose:
- Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If updating doesn't work, select Uninstall device. Restart your laptop to reinstall drivers automatically.
- Visit the HP website and download the latest audio drivers specific to your laptop model if needed.
Check Sound Settings
- Right-click the volume icon in the system tray and select Sound settings.
- Verify that the correct output device is selected under "Output".
- Ensure the volume slider is not set to 0 or muted.
Run the Audio Troubleshooter
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Locate Playing Audio and click Run. Follow the prompts.

Check for Conflicting Software
- Some third-party audio software can interfere with volume controls. If you have audio enhancement software or virtual sound devices installed, try disabling or uninstalling them temporarily.
Test in Safe Mode
- Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- Go to the Boot tab and select Safe boot. Click OK and restart.
- In Safe Mode, check if the volume controls work. If they do, a third-party app or service might be causing the issue.
Update Windows
- Make sure your system is up to date by checking for updates under Settings > Windows Update.
Perform System Restore
- If the issue started recently, use System Restore to revert your computer to a point where the volume controls were working.
- Press Win + R, type rstrui, and press Enter.
- Follow the prompts to restore your system.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
