I installed the Audacity software to digitize some cassette audio tapes. i first tried to use an RCA to USB connector - no luck getting sound. Then I realized the headphone jack on the laptop is apparently also a "microphone" jack. So, i used an RCA-RCA line. Still no luck. I have several different rca cables - none of them work. I have also tried multiple cassette players - ALL work with a headset, none get a signal into the laptop.
I have been in settings for hours. In Settings>Sound>Sound Control Panel>Recording tab, I see a selection for "Headset MIcrophone" which says "not plugged in" (EVEN THOUGH IT IS).
I have litearly spent 5 hours trying everything. Why doesnt this input work, and how do I get an input from the cassette player to the laptop for Audacity to use?
Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Cassette tapes use different signal therefore no way your computers know what are they. You have to convert to digital signals first. The most popular way is to convert cassette audio tape to mp3. Please try
