Hi @metralivee,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. Which laptop model and Windows version are you using?
  2. Which audio driver are you trying to install?
  3. Did this problem start after a Windows update or driver update?
  4. Are you installing the driver from the hp website or through Windows Update?
  5. Have you tried installing other drivers recently without issues?

 Troubleshooting steps:

1. Run the installer as Administrator

  • Right-click the driver setup file → Run as Administrator

2. Use Device Manager to uninstall old drivers

  1. Press Windows + X → Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers
  2. Right-click your audio device → Uninstall device (check “Delete the driver software for this device” if available)
  3. Restart your laptop and try installing the new driver again.

3. Disable antivirus or security software temporarily

  • Sometimes antivirus programs block driver installation. Disable them while installing the driver, then re-enable afterward.

4. Use the HP Support Assistant or manufacturer’s installer

  • HP laptops often work best with drivers provided via HP Support Assistant, as it ensures compatibility.

5. Check for Windows Updates

  • Make sure your system is fully updated; some drivers require the latest OS updates to install properly.

6. Try a clean boot

  • Perform a clean boot (disabling unnecessary startup services) and then run the driver installer.

I hope this helps

Hi @metralivee,

Thanks for your response .

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Is audio completely missing, or do you see the device in Device Manager with a warning icon?
  • In Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers, does Realtek appear, or is it listed under Unknown devices?
  • Did you uninstall the old driver before reinstalling, or install over it?
  • Are there any recent Windows updates installed just before the issue started?
  • Do you see any related errors in Event Viewer → System or Application logs?

1. Fully remove Realtek driver remnants (important)

Windows often keeps old driver fragments that block reinstallation.

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers
  3. Right-click Realtek High Definition Audio
  4. Select Uninstall device
  5. Check “Delete the driver software for this device”
  6. Restart the laptop

After reboot, do not install anything yet let me know what Windows shows for audio devices.

2. Install the HP driver in compatibility mode

Because your driver is built for Windows 10 v1709, Windows 11 may block it.

  1. Right-click the driver installer
  2. Select Properties → Compatibility
  3. Check Run this program in compatibility mode
  4. Choose Windows 10
  5. Check Run as administrator
  6. Try installing again

3. Disable automatic driver replacement (temporarily)

Windows 11 may be auto-injecting a conflicting audio driver.

  1. Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl
  2. Go to Hardware → Device Installation Settings
  3. Select No (your device might not work as expected)
  4. Save and restart
  5. Retry the driver install

4. Check Windows Audio services

Sometimes the driver installs but services fail.

  • Press Win + R → services.msc
  • Ensure these are Running and set to Automatic:
    • Windows Audio
    • Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

5. Temporary workaround (to restore sound)

If Realtek keeps failing, try this:

  1. Device Manager → Sound controllers
  2. Right-click → Update driver
  3. Browse my computer
  4. Let me pick from a list
  5. Select High Definition Audio Device (Microsoft)
  6. Restart

This often restores basic audio while we fix Realtek properly.

I hope this helps.
