Hi @allyH4,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Spectre x360 (15-df0043dx) has lost sound, and you’d like to restore the default audio. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check Basic Audio Settings
Make sure the laptop’s volume is turned up and not muted.
Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and confirm the volume slider is at an audible level.
If you’re using external speakers or headphones, disconnect them and test the built-in speakers.

Select the Correct Output Device
Right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and choose Sound settings.
Under Choose where to play sound, select Speakers (Realtek Audio) or Default Audio Device.
If you see multiple output devices, select the built-in speakers and test.

Run Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
Find Playing Audio and click Run.
Follow the on-screen instructions to detect and fix common audio issues.

Check Device Manager for Audio Drivers
Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
Right-click on Realtek Audio (or similar) and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
If there’s a yellow warning sign or no audio device listed, proceed to reinstall the driver.

Reinstall Audio Driver
Right-click the audio device and choose Uninstall device.
Restart the laptop — Windows should automatically reinstall the default audio driver.
If it doesn’t, go to Settings > Windows Update and check for driver updates.

Check Audio Services
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
Scroll down to Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
Make sure both services are set to Running and Automatic.
If not, right-click each service, select Start, and set the Startup type to Automatic.

Test After Each Step
Play a system sound or a short audio clip after completing each step to check if sound has been restored.

I hope this helps.
