I have an HP Spectre foldable laptop, and the mic stopped working unexpectedly. I can hear sound.  When I speak into the mic, it says 6% of .....  I troubleshot the issue, and nothing came up.  I have not upgraded to Windows 11.  I am still on Windows 10.  I shut down and rebooted, and nothing was resolved.  It was working just fine before.

Hi @Jay529,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the microphone on your HP Spectre foldable laptop has stopped working unexpectedly, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Check Physical Connections: Ensure that there are no physical issues with the microphone, such as a loose or disconnected cable. If the microphone is integrated into the laptop, make sure there is no debris blocking it.

Update Audio Drivers: Outdated or corrupted audio drivers can cause microphone issues. Update your audio drivers to the latest version. You can do this through the Device Manager on Windows 10:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."
  • Locate the "Audio inputs and outputs" section, expand it, and right-click on your microphone.
  • Choose "Update driver" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Check Microphone Settings:

  • Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings."
  • Under the "Input" section, ensure that the correct microphone is selected.
  • Test the microphone by speaking into it and checking the input level.

Run Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Go to "Update & Security" and then select "Troubleshoot."
  • Run the "Recording Audio" troubleshooter.

Check Privacy Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
  • Ensure that the "Microphone access for this device" is turned on.

Check Third-Party Applications: Some applications may have their own audio settings. If you are experiencing the issue in a specific application, check its settings to ensure the microphone is selected and configured correctly.

System Restore: If the issue started recently, you can use System Restore to revert your system to a point when the microphone was working.

  • Type "Create a restore point" in the Windows search bar and open the corresponding result.
  • Click on the "System Restore" button and follow the on-screen instructions.

Check for Windows Updates: Even if you haven't upgraded to Windows 11, make sure that your Windows 10 system is up to date. Updates may include fixes for hardware compatibility and driver issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
