All was well until I installed and used a registry cleaner. Afterwards my sound stopped happening and video became very choppy and slow. Video (no sound) would work fine if I opened the video file with VLC Player and after numerous runs of the Contro Panel troubleshooter, the video returned.
Sound did not.
There are no error messages; the system tells me the speakers are working. I've run the troubleshooter program from the control panel many times - it often concludes with a "cannot repair" message indicating an issue with HD Audio.
When I select Sound, Video and Game Controllers and select Conexant Pebble High Definition Smart Audio, In the "Events" tab under "Properties" I see the following:
"Device HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5067&SUBSYS_103C360B&REV_1003\4&204cfb37&0&0001 requires further installation."
When I select Sound, Video and Game Controllers and select High Definition Audio Device, In the "Events" tab under "Properties" I see the following:
"Device HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_2802&SUBSYS_80860101&REV_1000\4&204cfb37&0&0201 requires further installation.
How do I accomplish "further installation"?
Regards,
Dan

Hi, Dan:
For the conexant audio driver, you are going to have to hope the W7 driver works, because there are no W8, 8.1 or W10 drivers for that audio chip. Install and restart the PC.
This driver works the audio out of the notebook speakers and headphones.
This package provides the Conexant High-Definition SmartAudio Driver for the supported notebook/laptop models and operating systems.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp47501-48000/sp47803.exe
For the Intel HD audio driver, which controls the audio out of the HDMI port, here is what I recommend you do...
Since the Intel HD audio driver is part of the graphics driver, and the graphics is working, and there again, are only drivers for W7, you really only want to install the audio part of the graphics driver...
To do that, download, and save, but do not run this Intel graphics driver.
This package provides the graphics driver for the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset in the supported notebook/laptop models and operating systems.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp46001-46500/sp46021.exe
Download and install this free file utility. The 2nd file at the top of the page is for 64 bit.
After you install 7-Zip, right click on the Intel graphics driver file you downloaded, and select 7-Zip from the list of items.
Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp46021).
Once that is done, go to the device manager, click to expand the Sound, game and video controllers device manager category. You should be seeing two audio devices listed there...the Conexant one, now that you installed the W7 driver and one listed as a plain High Def audio device (that is the Intel HD audio chip).
Click on the plain High Def audio device. Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder 7-Zip created.
Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver should install. Then restart the PC.
Now, if the conexant audio still doesn't work, and your notebook has 4 GB of memory installed...
If it does, I know you are not going to believe this, but for some crazy reason having 4 GB of memory installed on that platform causes the sound not to work.
Try this workaround for that if your notebook has 4 GB of memory...
A problem with the Conexant audio means that you may hear no sound in Windows 10 even though everything appears to be working correctly.
Microsoft suggests running msconfig.exe and heading to the Boot tab. Click the Advanced options button, check the Maximum memory box and set the value to 3072.

Thanks a million, Paul.
The change in memory configuration did the trick. After days of unsuccessful trial and error, hearing that magical "ding" when I ran the test function was truly music to my ears in every sense of the words.
I still do not see HD Audio listed as one of the playback devices when I right-click the speaker icon, but Intel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI and Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio are listed in my Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers.
Thank you again.
Dan

You're very welcome, Dan.
If you are seeing the Intel(R) High Definition Audio and Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio devices listed in the Sound, Video and Game Controllers section of the device manager with no ! marks next to them, then everything is hunky-dory.
HDMI audio and video should work if you ever hook up your PC to a TV via a HDMI cable.
