Hi!, so, I've got a brand new HP Probook 640 G5 and my sound system is not working, neither the speakers or the mic. Device Manager shows there's an error in the Intel Smart Sound OED and no matter what I do it won't fix itself. I've updated everything that could possibly be updated, I've uninstalled it and rebooted the laptop and still nothing. What can I do?

Thank you so much in advanced!

Hello Tristán,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Troubleshooting Intel Smart Sound Issues on HP ProBook 640 G5

If you are experiencing issues with the Intel Smart Sound system on your HP ProBook 640 G5, where the sound system including the speakers and microphone is not functioning and Device Manager displays an error for Intel Smart Sound OED, follow the steps below to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

  1. Update or Reinstall the Audio Driver:

    • Go to the official HP Support website and search for your HP ProBook 640 G5 driver page.
    • Download the latest audio driver for your specific model.
    • Uninstall the current driver from Device Manager, then install the downloaded driver.
  2. Run Windows Update:

    • Ensure your Windows operating system is up to date as this can sometimes fix driver-related issues.
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security and click on Check for Updates.
  3. Check Windows Audio Services:

    • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Locate and ensure that the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services are running.
  4. Disable Sound Enhancements:

    • Right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar and select Sounds.
    • Go to the Playback tab, select your audio device, and click Properties.
    • In the Enhancements tab, check if any sound enhancements are enabled, and consider disabling them.
  5. BIOS Update:

    • Sometimes updating the BIOS can resolve compatibility issues.
    • Check the HP Support website for any available BIOS updates for your ProBook model.
  6. HP Support Assistant:

    • Use the HP Support Assistant to identify and resolve any driver issues.
    • Open HP Support Assistant from the Start menu, go to Updates, and install any driver updates prompted.
  7. Hardware Diagnostics:

    • Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows to test audio components.
    • Search for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows on the HP website to download and install it, then run the audio test.

If the sound still does not function after trying the steps above, consider reaching out to HP Support for further assistance as there might be a hardware issue with your device.
