For some reason my audio driver was missing on my laptop so I manually installed an updated version. I can hear sound now but when I plug my headphones in the sound still plays out loud and also in the headphones. Any ideas on what's going on?

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from your post that you are having issues with the audio not working after the recent windows update. Don't worry we're here to help you.
I see that you have already tried to follow the steps suggested and unfortunately nothing has helped to resolve this issue. Don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resolve this issue.
Let's start off by uninstalling the audio drivers on your PC from device manager:
Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers.
Then check the box delete the software for this device.
Now restart the computer and then update the Bios, Chipset and Audio drivers on your PC from our HP support website using this link.
Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.
Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.
Once done, restart the computer and then check.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Eagerly waiting for your response!

Nope that didn't work. I downloaded the intel driver and support assistant and updated 2 devices and now it says all my intel software is up to date but I still have the same audio issue where it plays sound in the headphones and laptop at the same time. It doesn't even recognise the headphones on the sound control panel (i have checked hidden devices) see below.

Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller is not present in my device manager. I'm guessing this is going to be an issue ill have to take to a professional face to face and show them on the laptop. ugh.

Hey thanks for the help HP support noticed my BIOS needed updating and two other wireless devices as well. After updating them realtek finally started to recognise when my headphones are plugged into the jack. Now my sound is working correctly. You were a great help. 🙂
