hp Pavilion Convertible
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The internal microphone on my Pavilion convertible has stopped working.  I have:

-  adjusted the sound recorder settings (right clicking the speaker icon);

-  updated the device drivers;

-  uninstalled the microphone in device manager and reinstalled the new drivers from hp;

-  adjusted the microphone boast and gain;

-  have gone through the sound and audio trouble shooter many, many, many times to try and set up the microphone.

When I am asked to read the text to set up the microphone, it does NOT record or register any sound.

This is a relatively new laptop...running VERY basic applications.

Any suggestions?

Right-click on an open space in the “Recording” box and left-click or tap on the “Show Disabled devices” feature.

Right-click again in the “Recording” box and check the “Show disconnected devices” feature as well.

Now in the Recording menu, you will have more icons like External Microphone, Internal Microphone Array, and Stereo Mix. You will need to right click on them and left click on the “Enable” option for each one.

Right-click on the ” Internal Microphone Array” icon and set it to default for the “playback” feature and also set it as a default communication device.

Left click or tap on the “Apply” button in order for the changes to take effect.

Note: If after choosing the Apply button the system stops responding you will have to close the window and try again only this time set the playback feature as default then save your changes and only afterward set it as default communication device.

Right, click or hold tap on “Internal Microphone Array”.

Left click or tap on the “Properties” feature.

Left click or tap on the “Effects” feature.

Check the box next to the “Disable System Effects” feature.

Left click or tap on the “Apply” button again.

Right-click or hold tap on the “Volume Control” icon and left-click or tap on the “Playback Devices” feature.

Right-click on the “Speakers” icon and set it as “default device” and also “Default Communication device” for the system.

Left click on the “Apply” button after you are done.

Right-click on the speaker icon in the bottom-right part of the screen and choose Recording devices.

In the “Levels” tab make sure that “Microphone” and “Microphone Boost” are set to the maximum, you can do that by sliding them to the right until the first one shows 100 and the boost is set to +30.0 dB. Then click OK.

In the “Enhancements” tab (if found), make sure to uncheck the “Disable all sound effects” checkbox.

Now visit the “Advanced” tab too and make sure to uncheck the “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” checkbox and click “OK“.

Thanks.  I appreciate the detailed instructions.

Unfortunately, I've done all that and the result is the same.  I have also uninstalled the device and reinstalled the drivers from the HP website.

The ProdID is 1UG17UA#ABL.

@alofns, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

Does the issue persist when you use a headphone with an external mic?

Also, as you mentioned you have updated the audio drivers and BIOS on your PC from HP website and the issue still persists.

Go to Windows Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers section.
In the list of audio device drivers, look for Realtek High-Definition Audio. This is the device driver for BeatsAudio (a little bit sneaky, wouldn’t you say?).
Right-click and select Disable. The downward arrow displays on this driver, indicating it is disabled. (NOTE: At this point, you won’t be able to play any music files.)
Right-click and select Update Driver Software.
Select Browse my computer for driver software.
Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
You should see a window that says Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware. NOTE: If you see a window that says something like This is the best driver for this device, exit the window and repeat steps 4, 5, and 6.
In the Model box, highlight High Definition Audio Device (this is the substitute audio device driver) and click Next.
At the Update Driver Warning window, click Yes. You should see a confirmation window with High Definition Audio Device displayed. Click Close.
In the list of audio device drivers in the Sound, video and game controllers section, you’ll notice that the High Definition Audio Device now displays instead of Realtek High-Definition Audio.
At the prompt to reboot, click Yes.

If the issue still persists try the steps recommended below.

background intelligent transfer service (BITS) transfers files (downloads or uploads) between a client and server and provides progress information related to the transfers. If the BITS service is turned off, windows update may have problems delivering files to your computer.

Start the BITS service click start, and then click run.

Type services.msc in the open box and then click ok.

Right-click background intelligent transfer service, and then click properties.

On the general tab in the startup type box, click Automatic, and then click apply.

In the service status section of the properties dialog box, verify that the BITS service is started. if it is not started, click start.

Click apply, and then click ok.

Also, try updating the audio drivers using this link: https://hp.care/2qAimuQ

Update the BIOS using this link: https://hp.care/2qBipGN

Thanks for the detailed response.

I don't use an external mic or headphones, since I purchased a laptop with internal hardware.

I followed the first set of instructions, and now the mic option for "internal microphone array" is gone.  I tried to set up the microphone from the one listed, however, the computer can not hear me.

HP Recommended

As a result of the last changes, I now have no sound from the speakers.

I reversed the driver change so I have my sound back.

Updated the drivers (which were already up-to-date) and updated the BIOS.

I turned up the microphone gain and boost to the max...and yell into the internal microphone...it will pick some of it up.

I don't consider the problem as being resolved.

@alofns,

It looks like you were interacting with @A4Apollo, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,
I'm the Jeet_Singh & I'm at your service.

As I understand you have already tried all possible troubleshooting steps and still having the audio quality issues.

I would suggest you could perform a audio test from F2 (Please capture the failure ID for further assistance).

Depending on the test results, I would suggest if the test passes, I would recommend you perform a Microsoft Push button reset on the notebook.

Windows 10 has a push-button reset feature that repairs your computer by reinstalling the operating system. This can be done either while preserving your personal data and customization, or removing all your personal data.

For more assistance, please go through the steps: Click here

If the issue still persists, I would suggest the only option would be to perform a system recovery using the partition available on your PC. Doing this will wipe off everything and set the computer back to the original factory conditions. So, please remember to back up your data before initiating system recovery. If for some reason the recovery fails. The only other way to install Windows would be to order the recovery media for your laptop and using the recovery media you can install Windows. You can check if the recovery media is available online on www.hp.com/drivers by entering the exact model no. of your laptop. To find the exact model no. click here: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

HP PCs - How to Reset Your Computer to Factory Settings (Windows 10, 8, 7)

HP PCs - Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive

Otherwise, you could also reach HP phone support to order the recovery media. If your product is out of warranty, please choose paid options to get the tech support number.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get the phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

If you have any troubles, let me know and I will do my best to help!

This problem is NOT resolved.

I have followed every instruction and suggestion to the letter.

I have recently done a complete factory reset of the laptop and the result is still the same.  The microphone volume is low.

I am currently restoring the hardware for the third time in 2 days.

Not happy at all.
