Elitebook

I have about a dozen laptops, both EliteBook and ProBook running Windows 10 where the internal Microphone stopped working. Device manager has it listed as Intel Smart Sound. I have been searching online and can't find any other reference to this issue. Any help is much appreciated.

  • I have backed out recent Windows Updates and no luck.
  • I have run the Windows troubleshooter, no errors
  • Uninstalled it from Device Manager, both under the audio device as well as under the system device
  • I am made sure that the apps have the proper permissions to access it
  • Went to Intel's site and downloaded their driver detection and didn't find any updates
  • Have run the HP updates
  • External microphones work just fine
  • I believe it to be caused by Windows Update but I backed out the recent updates and the problem still persists

we just encountered this in a corp environment too.

looking at Teams logs:

16th nov - good call
Device name:
Intel® Smart Sound Technology for Digital Microphones
Device driver
Intel(R) Corporation: 10.29.0.4842

18th  nov -  no mic
Device name
Intel® Smart Sound Technology for Digital Microphones
Device driver
Intel(R) Corporation: 10.29.0.7767

We updated the BIOS to brand new one released on the 8th and rolled back the driver from

10.29.0.7767

to

10.29.0.4842

mic started working again.

i dont know if the BIOS update has prevented the issue from recurring when windows next tries to update that driver.
