HP Pavilion laptop 15-CS0XXX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I found the easy solution to this problem and was disappointed that HP support was unable to provide resolution to the issue described in forum post https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/Built-in-mic-is-too-directional-Will-only-pick-up-perso...

"People cannot be heard off to the side. Microphone is only sensitive to people sitting directly in front. Not good for a group of people to talk."

In the Start menu, search for and open HP Audio Control.

Select the Input tab on the left margin.

Turn the HP Noise Cancellation switch to OFF.

Instead of "Only my voice", select "Multiple voices".

It's necessary to make both changes.

Now speakers sitting off-center will be clearly heard.  You're welcome, HP Support.
