For the past couple weeks I've had an issue with my laptop not detecting the built-in audio input microphone. I switched to using an external microphone to get through my meetings, which worked without problems. I thought I had made progress on the issue since my computer was showing the microphone again after rebooting this morning, but then when I would try to use it in an app (such as Zoom) the app would not detect the microphone, and the sound settings would go back to not seeing the audio input device. I tried updating the microphone driver after restarting my laptop, but it said the drivers were up to date. I tried updating my PC with WIndows Update, and now the sound settings are not detecting the microphone at all even after a restart:
In my device manager, the microphone still appears under "Sound, video, and game controllers" (it is the AMD device):
But it does not appear under "Audio inputs and outputs":
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

@KristevaFan1, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop not detecting microphone!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Since your external mic works but the built-in one disappears intermittently, let's go through some targeted troubleshooting steps to fix this issue.
Enable Hidden Audio Devices
- Right-click the Speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.
- Scroll down to Input and click Manage sound devices.
- Under Disabled devices, check if your microphone is listed.
- If found, enable it.
Run Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Recording Audio and click Run.
- Follow the prompts and check if Windows can detect and fix the issue.
Check Device Manager & Reinstall Audio Driver
Since the microphone appears under "Sound, video, and game controllers" but not "Audio inputs and outputs", try this:
- Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
- Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
- Right-click the AMD Audio Device (or any relevant audio device) and select Uninstall device.
- Check Delete the driver software for this device and click Uninstall.
- Restart your PC—Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
- If it doesn’t, download and install the latest AMD Audio Driver from HP’s Support Page.
Check App Permissions
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Ensure Microphone access is turned on for Windows and the apps (like Zoom) you use.
Check BIOS Settings (If Issue Persists)
- Restart your laptop and press F10 repeatedly to enter the BIOS menu.
- Navigate to Advanced or Security settings.
- Look for Internal Microphone and ensure it is enabled.
- Save changes and exit.
Windows Update & HP Support Assistant
- Check for updates: Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
- Run HP Support Assistant: Open the HP Support Assistant app and check for driver updates.
Hopefully, one of these steps resolves your issue! Let me know if you need further assistance. Looking forward to getting your microphone back in action! 🎤🔧
Take care, and have an amazing day!
