HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl0XX
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am planning to use my HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl0XX laptop as a pseudo-desktop for image and audio processing.  One thing I'd like to get is a large screen 4k monitor to do that work.  Can I connect a 4K monitor to my HDMI port and properly/reliably drive it to 4k resolution?  Do I need an adapter of some type or a certain type of 4k monitor?

Please advise.

Thanks for your help!

Your machine is an HP Spectre x360 - 15-bl075nr, tts specs:

          https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c05381487

It has

1 HDMI;

1 headphone/microphone combo;

1 Thunderbolt™ 3 (HP Sleep and Charge);

1 USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (HP Sleep and Charge);

1 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (HP Sleep and Charge)

The Thunderbolt™ 3 port should be suitable for a 4K monitor. The HDMI port is also suitable BUT you may not get good refresh rates.

You can also use Thunderbolt™ 3 port for an eGPU such as OMEN Accelerator:

@banhien

Just to be clear, the Omen Accelerator is only  if I want to do gaming, right?

Any 4K monitor that can connect to a Thunderbolt 3 connector will work for me?

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Getting close to actually buying a 4K monitor.  Based on what I learned from above, the TB3 port would be best to use.

The monitor I am looking at has a DisplayPort 1.2 port and HDMI.  Will a TB3 to DP cable work or is there some other type of adapter needed?

@billyjk

I don't use external 4K monitor but for testing I used my 4K TV and I tested the following adapter

          https://cplonline.com.au/adapters/hdmi-adapters/startech-cdp2hd4k60w-usb-c-to-hdmi-adapter-4k-60hz.h...

From laptop to TV I only get 30Hz. My direct HDMI (same laptop) to HDMI (TV) also get 30Hz. Could be due to the Intel UHD graphics. My TV is a 65" 4K Panasonic.

K.  Thanks!

Correct me if I am wrong, but that's not for the TB3 port, right?  It's for a standard USB-C port to HDMI.

My machines (3 of them) all have one TB3 port each. 2 HP machines (one Omen and  one Elitebook 840 G5) and one Dell (Inspiron 13 7000) machine. I did not test the Omen which has GTX 1070 video card.
