Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a problem with my HP laptop (2024 model) running Windows 11. The left speaker is crackling, even when the sound is muted or the volume is set to zero.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Updated and reinstalled the Realtek/HP audio driver

  • Disabled all sound enhancements

  • Changed the sound format (16-bit / 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz)

  • Set the left channel balance to 0

  • Tested with headphones → no crackling

  • Tried on battery power and with the charger unplugged → same issue,
but the crackling becomes louder when the charger is plugged in

It really seems to be a hardware issue with the internal left speaker or possibly an electrical interference related to the power supply.

Is there any way to completely disable the internal speakers (or just the left one) until I can get the laptop serviced?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi @MisterBW

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

You're absolutely right to suspect a hardware fault or electrical interference—especially since the crackling persists even when muted and worsens with the charger plugged in. That kind of persistent noise from one speaker, despite all software-level adjustments, strongly points to a physical issue with the speaker or its shielding.

While Windows doesn’t offer a direct toggle to disable just one internal speaker, there are a few effective workarounds to silence the left speaker entirely until you can get it serviced.

Option 1: Redirect all audio to the right speaker

You’ve already tried setting the left channel balance to 0, but let’s double-check the steps to ensure it’s applied system-wide:

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar > Sounds.
  2. Go to the Playback tab > select your internal speaker > Properties.
  3. Under the Levels tab, click Balance.
  4. Set Left (L) to 0, Right (R) to 100.
  5. Click OK and Apply.

This won’t stop the crackling entirely if it’s hardware-generated, but it will prevent audio from being routed to the left speaker.

Option 2: Use headphones or external speakers exclusively

Since the crackling disappears with headphones, you can bypass the internal speakers entirely:

  • Plug in headphones or external speakers.
  • Go to Settings > System > Sound.
  • Under Output, select your external device as the default.
  • Disable the internal speaker:
    • In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    • Right-click your internal audio device (e.g., Realtek Audio) > Disable device.
    • This disables all internal audio, including both speakers.

You can re-enable it later when needed.

Option 3: Disable internal speaker via Device Manager (advanced)

If your laptop lists individual speaker components:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Audio inputs and outputs.
  • Look for entries like Internal Speaker (Left) or similar.
  • If listed separately, right-click and Disable.

Most laptops don’t expose individual speakers this way, but it’s worth checking.

Let me know which option works best for your setup or if you'd like help configuring Equalizer APO—I’ll walk you through it.
