Hi @vonLehcim,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
It sounds like the microphone issue on your HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eg3xxx could be caused by a driver problem or incorrect settings. Let's try some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve this:
1. Check Microphone Settings:
- Right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "Sounds."
- Go to the "Recording" tab and ensure that your microphone (Realtek) is set as the default device. If it isn't, right-click it and choose "Set as Default Device."
- Ensure that the microphone is enabled and its volume is set to an appropriate level.
2. Update or Reinstall the Realtek Audio Driver:
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting "Device Manager."
- Expand "Sound, video, and game controllers."
- Right-click on "Realtek Audio" and select "Update driver."
- Choose "Search automatically for drivers" and let Windows search for the latest drivers.
- If this doesn’t work, try uninstalling the Realtek Audio driver and then reboot your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the correct driver.
3. Run the Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Under "Input," select your microphone and click on "Troubleshoot."
- Follow the prompts to see if Windows can automatically fix the problem.
4. Check Privacy Settings:
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Ensure that "Microphone access for this device" is turned on.
- Make sure that apps like Skype and WhatsApp have permission to use the microphone.
5. Reset Sound Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Sound > Advanced sound options.
- Click on "App volume and device preferences." Ensure that the microphone input is correctly selected for the apps you're using.
6. Test with an External Microphone:
- Plug in an external microphone or headset and see if it works. This can help determine if the issue is hardware-related.
If you've tried all these steps and still can't get the microphone to work, this could be hardware.
Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi Elohi_NRN,
Thanks for your response! I had tried all the suggestions (from other members) before I started the chat.
Meanwhile, I finally managed to get through to HP support. The solution was a new installation of Intel.
Take care,
