The onlky work around is to plug in ear buds or headphones. It cuts the noise. The sound can still be swirched back to the speakers by clicking the options in the bottom right corner ( where the battery level etc are)

OK folks hope this works for you but I bought a  tiny £4.50 usb mike, search ebay or amazon for Innov8, other companies do them too,  plugged it in and no more white noise.  Total success. Pass it on

Dear all,

Good news: things work again if you switch to Beta Channel, just go to settings (right corner under, next to clock),  go to About Chrome OS, Additional Details, then Channel, and then Change Channel to Beta. It will start to Update, then you will have to restart and after that things will work again. Still feel that mike volume might be lower then before but will have to test that. For now, this solves the thing 😁

It worked!

Totally agree that HP should be communicating these issues. I have an HP Pavilion laptop, I have wasted a good hour trying to find answers and creating an account just to get to this point.  And, still no answer as it seems to just be frustrated customers talking to each other and no actual support

The problem should be fixed now. On chromebooks it was done by an update.  Temporary fix was by using a USB mic or plugging in earbuds.

Thank you!  I am pleased to say this at least has worked.  I updated my laptop but that didnt solve the problem so perhaps it is because mine is a different model.  However I am fine with the headphone solution for now.  All the best
