Hi @TJP24,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your microphone cuts out after a few minutes on a new laptop, it could be due to various reasons including driver issues, power settings, or software conflicts. Here’s a detailed guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Hardware Connections

  • External Microphone: If you're using an external microphone, ensure it's properly connected to the correct port and that any necessary drivers are installed.
  • Internal Microphone: If it’s an internal microphone, make sure there are no obstructions and that it’s enabled in the settings.

2. Update Audio Drivers

  • Via Device Manager:
    1. Right-click the Start menu and select “Device Manager”.
    2. Expand “Audio inputs and outputs”.
    3. Right-click your microphone device and select “Update driver”.
    4. Choose “Search automatically for updated driver software”.
  • Via HP Website: Visit your HP  website and download the latest audio drivers for your specific model.

3. Adjust Microphone Settings:

  1. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select “Sounds” or “Open Sound settings”.
  2. Go to the “Recording” tab.Select your microphone and click “Properties”.
  3. Under the “Levels” tab, ensure the microphone volume is set appropriately.
  4. Under the “Advanced” tab, uncheck “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” and see if that resolves the issue.

4. Check Privacy Settings:

  1. Go to “Settings” > “Privacy” > “Microphone”.
  2. Ensure that microphone access is enabled for apps you want to use.

5. Run Troubleshooter (Windows):

  1. Go to “Settings” > “Update & Security” > “Troubleshoot”.Select “Additional troubleshooters”.
  2. Click “Recording Audio” and run the troubleshooter to detect and fix issues.

6. Check for Power Management Settings

  • Windows:
    1. Open “Device Manager”.
    2. Expand “Sound, video and game controllers”.
    3. Right-click your audio device and select “Properties”.
    4. Go to the “Power Management” tab and uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
    5. Click “OK” and restart your computer.

7. Check for Software Conflicts

  • Background Apps: Close any unnecessary background applications that might be using or interfering with the microphone.
  • Conflicting Software: Check if any software with audio settings (like voice chat applications) might be causing the issue.

8. Update Operating System

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
