Hi @TJP24,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your microphone cuts out after a few minutes on a new laptop, it could be due to various reasons including driver issues, power settings, or software conflicts. Here’s a detailed guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Hardware Connections
- External Microphone: If you're using an external microphone, ensure it's properly connected to the correct port and that any necessary drivers are installed.
- Internal Microphone: If it’s an internal microphone, make sure there are no obstructions and that it’s enabled in the settings.
2. Update Audio Drivers
- Via Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start menu and select “Device Manager”.
- Expand “Audio inputs and outputs”.
- Right-click your microphone device and select “Update driver”.
- Choose “Search automatically for updated driver software”.
- Via HP Website: Visit your HP website and download the latest audio drivers for your specific model.
3. Adjust Microphone Settings:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select “Sounds” or “Open Sound settings”.
- Go to the “Recording” tab.Select your microphone and click “Properties”.
- Under the “Levels” tab, ensure the microphone volume is set appropriately.
- Under the “Advanced” tab, uncheck “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” and see if that resolves the issue.
4. Check Privacy Settings:
- Go to “Settings” > “Privacy” > “Microphone”.
- Ensure that microphone access is enabled for apps you want to use.
5. Run Troubleshooter (Windows):
- Go to “Settings” > “Update & Security” > “Troubleshoot”.Select “Additional troubleshooters”.
- Click “Recording Audio” and run the troubleshooter to detect and fix issues.
6. Check for Power Management Settings
- Windows:
- Open “Device Manager”.
- Expand “Sound, video and game controllers”.
- Right-click your audio device and select “Properties”.
- Go to the “Power Management” tab and uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
- Click “OK” and restart your computer.
7. Check for Software Conflicts
- Background Apps: Close any unnecessary background applications that might be using or interfering with the microphone.
- Conflicting Software: Check if any software with audio settings (like voice chat applications) might be causing the issue.
8. Update Operating System
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
