I have a microphone with a 3,55mm jack, but when I plug it into my headphone jack port (my laptop doesnt have a microphone one), It does not work. My laptop (even with microphone plugged in) will take sound from the inbuilt microphone and try to out put it to my external mic. Is there some setting i have to change?

The specs of your machine is
https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06060307
It only has 1 headphone/microphone combo port which is perfect for headsets. On many machines, the combo port won't work for a standalone microphone. You can go to JB HiFi (or any good hifi or computer shop) to buy a splitter or an "Y" adapter such as
StarTech Ion to 2x 3 Position 3.5mm Headset Splitter Adapter
Regards.
