Hi @MJM26
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to have your microphone not detected on your HP laptop (17z-cp200) running Windows 11. If you’ve already tried the usual troubleshooting steps, here’s a comprehensive guide with additional steps to help get your microphone working again.
1. Check if Microphone is Enabled in Settings
Sometimes the microphone might be disabled in your laptop's settings or Windows may have selected the wrong default microphone.
- Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and choose Sounds.
- Go to the Recording tab.
- Right-click an empty area and ensure that Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices are checked.
- If your microphone shows up here, right-click on it and select Enable.
- If the microphone shows as disabled, right-click and select Set as Default Device.
2. Ensure Correct Input Device is Selected
Sometimes Windows may default to another audio device (like a webcam or external microphone).
- Right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar and select Open Sound Settings.
- Under Input, select the correct microphone from the dropdown menu.
- If you don’t see your microphone here, try unplugging any external audio devices (headsets, etc.) and check again.
3. Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers
Outdated or corrupt drivers are one of the most common reasons for audio devices not being detected.
Update Drivers:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Audio inputs and outputs and Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click your microphone device and select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Reinstall Drivers:
- In Device Manager, right-click the microphone device or audio controller under Sound, video, and game controllers.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop and Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers.
If automatic updates don’t help, you can go to the HP support website, download the latest audio driver for your laptop model, and install it manually.
4. Check Privacy Settings for Microphone Access
Windows 11 may block microphone access for apps due to privacy settings.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Make sure Microphone access is turned on.
- Scroll down and ensure that the apps you want to use the microphone (like Zoom, Teams, or other audio apps) are allowed access.
I hope this helps.

Hello Sneha_01. Thank you so much for your detailed message. However, I have tried all those steps -- several times -- and none of them solved the problem. Also, the first solution you suggested says "Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and choose Sounds. Go to the Recording tab," but there is no recording tab. When I try Microphone Test, it just tells me that no input device is detected. Thank you again.

It's not limited to any specific application. It's not there in dcvice manager or control panel, it doesn't work with Sound Recorder, etc. Any time I try to make any adjustment to the sound input device, it says no device is detected.
Thanks for your help!

Hi @MJM26,
Thank you for your response, It sounds like your microphone is not being detected by your HP laptop, and it’s not showing up in Device Manager or Control Panel, which can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:
The Troubleshooting tool automatically finds and fixes many computer issues. Use it to troubleshoot microphone problems.
In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.
Click Troubleshooting.
Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio recording.
NOTE:
Administrator permission is required to run this program. If prompted, type the administrator password or provide confirmation.
The Sound troubleshooter opens. Click Next. The troubleshooter begins checking the audio service status.
Select the device you want to troubleshoot, and then click Next.
Follow the on-screen instructions and make any changes suggested by the troubleshooter. When done, close the troubleshooter.
If the problem persists, continue to the next step.
We may need to reset the privacy settings for the Microphone if the issue occurred after any recent windows updates:
- Open Settings from your start menu.
- Click on Privacy in order to access all your privacy settings.
- Select Microphone from the left pane and then click the Change button.
- Now, turn on the microphone for this device.
- Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
- Finally, in the app list, make sure to turn on microphone access for every app you want to give permission to access your microphone.
- Repeat the same exact steps but for your webcam this time.
If the issue persists, uninstall the microphone driver and restart to automatically install a fresh driver for the same.
- Open device manager, the fastest way is through the search bar:
- Open ‘Audio Inputs and Outputs’
- Left-click on your recording device.
- In the menu that opens up Click ‘Uninstall’.
- delete the driver. click apply/OK and then, restart the pc.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.Take care and have a great day ahead!
